Living in a House Divided: The NFC Championship Game
My husband, Bill, is a dyed-in-the-wool Green Bay Packer fan. Which is great because wool is mandatory attire when watching football in Wisconsin. Especially outside. Wool and a roll of pink insulation. I, on the other hand, don’t like to be mind-numbingly cold, and Green Bay is pretty much in the eye of the Polar Vortex throughout the football season. So most years I’m a staunch Seahawk fan, particularly when the Steelers don’t make it to the playoffs. Yep, this year it’s the Packers and the Seahawks, and I’m thinking Sunday is gonna be loud at our house--Beast Quake loud.To be completely candid, our competing alliances can be a source of considerable conflict at our house. Like, should we dress the dog in a Seahawk jersey or a Packer one? Or, what kind of cheese should we serve during halftime--Wisconsin cheddar or Beechers? And then there’s the pregame music: should we listen to Nirvana, Heart, Pearl Jam, or…polka?I will agree with Bill that the Packers are somewhat great-ish. There's the Lombardi legacy: "If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?" I get all that. But the reality is, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a big question mark this weekend with a torn left calf muscle. Just between you and me, I'm pretty sure there aren't enough steroids in the NFL to keep Aaron's leg pumped up for four quarters. And if Kam Chancellor leaps over the line like he did twice last weekend, it will not be a beautiful day in the neighborhood for Mr. Rodgers. Then, sadly, the Seahawks will advance to the Super Bowl for a chance to bring home the Lombardi trophy. A-gain. But only if that were to happen, hypothetically. All that to say, I would be sinning if I didn’t pray for my husband’s favorite quarterback to make it through the game, calves intact. And I will, because I'm all for peace on earth and planet Sullivan. For now, though, I’m left with a few important decisions to make, like what color scarf should I wear with my green sweater on Sunday, gold or blue? How's this season playing out at your house? Skittles, anyone?
