10 Fun Valentine's Day Ideas--for Singles
Back before there were dinosaurs, I was single. And although it was a long time ago, I distinctly remember how some events made me feel. Homecoming. Prom. "Couples only," thank you. And because I never was a "couple" in high school, I never went. I didn't even attend the Sadie Hawkin's dance, because the guy I invited politely declined. Ugh!Then, like clockwork, Valentine's Day came around on February 14th. Every year. And what I thought was just coincidence, was now deliberate: I WASN'T INCLUDED.Well, in honor of my single friends, it's time we redefine this exclusivist holiday. This year, Valentine's Day will be fun for everyone. The key is to plan ahead. That way you can look forward to, enjoy and remember a great Valentine's Day--sans the "significant other." Here are 10 ideas--most for less than $20--to make it happen:1. Treat yourself. Whether it's a manicure, pedicure, haircut, latte--or a long bubble bath with your favorite book or magazine--treat yourself on February 14th.2. Light the candles, turn on the music and invite some friends over for a wine tasting/chocolate dessert buffet. Have everyone wear red, pink, black or white.3. Plan a project you've been putting off--something you enjoy--and make a date with yourself to start it. Paint a room, sew a quilt, rearrange your furniture, plan your garden for this year...think of something you love to do, and begin on February 14th.4. Buy or make a vintage Valentine card for someone who has done something for you this year. It'll be a reminder of God's love to you through the loving acts of friends and family.5. Write a list of the character qualities of the person you want to marry. Who knows? Maybe you'll be spending next Valentine's Day with them!6. After you've got your Valentine's Day plans on the calendar, volunteer to watch your married friend's kids while they celebrate Valentine's Day on a night you're available to babysit. This would also be a great gift for a single mom, so she can get out, too.7. Buy a bouquet of red or pink tulips for your desk at work. When someone asks you where they came from, just give them a knowing look.8. Go out with a good friend for dinner (happy-hour-appetizers-for-less?) and a movie--it'll be something to look forward to, to enjoy, and to remember. Three for the price of one!9. The Northwest Flower and Garden Show runs from February 8th-12th. Celebrate Valentine's Day early, grab a friend and welcome spring!10. Bake pink cupcakes and deliver them to your local fire or police station on February 14th with a big heart shaped card thanking them for their service all year long. That's what I came up with--what are your ideas?Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11(Next post: Valentine's Day Ideas for kids and indifferent teens.)
